Hopefully all of you in The Cloud Network community had a chance to relax and recharge between preparing for back-to-school and attending Google Cloud Next ‘23 in the month of August!

Far from standing idly by during the summer doldrums, the discourse around cloud networking costs, generative AI, hybrid cloud, cloud security, and the skills gap continued to move forward. Here are some of the most compelling discussions that you may have missed this month:

6 Secrets of Cloud Cost Optimization

Soaring cloud costs is a topic that unfortunately isn’t going away anytime soon. Fortunately, John Edwards has taken the time to round up some very practical, lesser-known approaches that organizations can use to optimize their cloud costs – all without sacrificing performance or security. This one is definitely worth a few minutes and some consideration for anyone in cloud networking.

Generative AI Is The Future. Harness Its Power Now.

To be fair, this is a listen, not a read. But if you’re looking to cut through the noise and get practical about generative AI in the cloud, this podcast with cloud architect, developer, and angel investor Lynn Langit is a compelling discussion. TL;DL: At around 17 minutes, Lynn predicts that the biggest impact of generative AI in the cloud will be on infrastructure and security automation/security as code. Do you agree?

Hybrid Cloud Considerations Are Rising

Cloud practitioners say they’re increasingly turning to hybrid cloud for operational efficiency, improved security, faster application development, better business insights, and one major advantage – avoiding the feeling of cloud vendor lock-in, says Futuriom analyst Scott Raynovich. He predicts: “Networking will become an essential hybrid tool to connect cloud services wherever they reside, which requires a more programmable, software-driven approach.”

Why Securing East-West Network Traffic Is So Important – And How It Can Be Done

In this discussion about datacenter security, Bruce Davie takes a look at how we came to rely on choke points and centralized appliances for security control and what’s needed in today’s world where lateral movement is unfortunately commonplace. Although cloud only comes into the discussion briefly, the piece gives important context into the common cloud security models of today that have been largely lifted and shifted from on-prem.

Meeting Productivity Demands While Enduring Talent Scarcity with an Automation-First Mindset

ONUG said it best on the platform formerly known as Twitter: “From an engineer’s perspective, mastery is always temporary, and learning emerging technologies is laborious. Meanwhile, business demands are pushing those same engineers to provide ever greater levels of service quality.” This article does an excellent job of exploring the cycle perpetuating the skills gap and making the case for automation as a part of the solution.
