Is it just me, or does 2023 already seem like ancient history? We may be “living in the future,” but there are still several excellent articles from last month that I’d venture are worth a few minutes of your time.  

 

Our December roundup includes a very mixed bag of reads – from the (admittedly expected) predictions piece, to book recommendations, a story to up your network resilience, a warning about open source, and advice on selecting the right cloud for your business. Deloitte predicts genAI, specialized computing, industrial metaverse will top 2024 trends 

Deloitte’s tech predictions are always one to watch, and this year didn’t disappoint. Reporter Taryn Plumb shared thoughts and insights from Mike Bechtel, Deloitte’s chief futurist. In addition to the expected GenAI theme, the prediction about moving away from brute force compute caught our eye. As Bechtel aptly notes, when it comes to architecture: “The lift and shift playbook doesn’t cut it anymore."

Kubernetes co-founder flags the cloud's big open source problem 

According to Kubernetes co-founder Craig McLuckie, maintainers of key foundational projects are aging out, leaving the software unattended. Combined with the fact that many enterprises don’t have a solid grasp on open-source dependencies in their systems, this could be a recipe for disaster. As Executive Editor Diana Goovaerts points out: “90% of all cloud infrastructure runs on open-source Linux software, and has done so since at least 2017.”
